Below please find my recommended remarks concerning the effort to stop the collection of non-cognotive data and personally identifiable information. At the website www.ItsMyPII.com you will find a very disturbing video from the Common Core cheerleaders that gives a description in their words on how important data is to the success of Common Core.
In the 2015 Legislative Session, Rep. Mark Finchem (R-LD-11) ran HB2190, a bill designed to move Arizona out of the low level, unvalidated Common Core standards (to support our own higher standards); to prohibit the collection and distribution of personally identifiable and non-cognitive data; and to protect parental authority (rights). When the bill did not pass the Arizona Senate, parents were horrified. From that a litigation initiative was born.
A group of parents, teachers, K-12 students and legislators came together to launch www.ItsMyPII.com. The Mission Statement for the group is simple, “To secure, protect and defend Parental Rights and Personally Identifiable Information (PII) of students, parents and teachers.” In this complex and technologically advancing world, with the click of a mouse, students’ personally identifiable information can be shared with anyone instantaneously. That information can include everything from their name to the details of the most sensitive issues.
WHAT’S IT TO YOU?
So what’s My PII to you? American’s pay companies like LifeLock $MM’s every year to protect their personally identifiable data from nefarious use. It’s My PIIis vital to all who care about the right of self-determination and equal access to opportunity for students as they make their way through our educational system. The data generated and collected today on each individual parent and teacher will be used to determine what opportunities they have available to them tomorrow. All children regardless of their background should be free to explore, blossom and even stumble as they navigate their way through this world. Each child is different and good teachers approach each child as an individual. As it stand now, stumbles can become stifling if the data each stumble generates is used to limit future educational opportunities.
For example, data generated through high-stakes testing could prevent our most gifted students from attending their full potential if it is used to place them on a “track” that limits their choices on what they study in the future. Through the collection of “Effective Domain data”, a child’s bad day can turn into a life of days without choice. In order to ensure that our children are free to achieve their full potential, we must:
WHAT CAN YOU DO?
The “core” of Common Core is data collection. Superintendent Diane Douglas was elected with a clear mandate to eliminate Common Core and move Arizona K-12 education to state control of standards and state protection of parental rights and student data. An injunction was created to:
We’ve invited a number of organizations to join us in this fight. Later this month I will fly to Washington DC to meet with such organizations as the Family Research Council, FreedomWorks and others to appeal to them for help. The 10th Amendment Center and many TEA Party organizations across the state are now working to get the word out about our endeavor.
I am available to speak to any group that would like to have a speaker. We are planning to produce a number of informational videos in the coming days that will be posted on the www.ItsMyPII.com web site. We look forward to your support and our parents, teachers and children will be eternally grateful for your support.
